CRIB 5 REGULATIONS
Compulsory Contract Mattress and Contract Bed Regulations
In order to buy a mattress and / or bed for commercial use, the product must adhere to specific UK & EU fire regulatory standards.
The standards which need to be met for a contract bed product go beyond those found in beds & mattresses for domestic homes.
In order for a bed and / or mattress to qualify as a ‘contract’ product it must meet the ‘medium standard’ that has been specifically tested for:
• BS EN597-1 (Cigarette) • BS EN597-2 (Match) • CRIB 5 - BS6807
Products treated for the above will meet the BS7177: 1996 regulations (Crib 5). “Specification for resistance to ignition of mattresses, divans and bed bases’.
All products within our range of Contracts Beds on Bedsdirect.com meet these regulations as standard and can be recognised by our Crib 5 logo.
All of the following charities and businesses are recognised as requiring Crib 5 treated products and therefore must use ‘contract’ mattresses and / or beds as standard:
•Residential schools / Universities and Halls of Residence •Hostels •Bed and Breakfasts / Hotels and Guest Houses •Hospitals •Holiday Camps •Prisons
Government legislation dictates that it is an offence to use contract mattresses and contract beds that have not met BS7177 standards for commercial use. Failure to use a product that does not meet the minimum requirements could lead to prosecution in the event of a fire.
We recommend you consult your fire officer who will give you full details of any special requirements relating to crib 5, source 5 or contract bed requirements.
